About the EXPO

SAPMAs 40th Expo 2023 is all done and dusted.

Congratulations to all involved, in particular the Committee and Sub Committee (comprising Keith Thomson, Mark Medwell, and Paulo Castro) responsible for the planning of this event.
Keith, Paulo, and Mark really pulled out all stops to ensure that we were able to make the move from Cosgrove Hall to Prince Alfred College in a smooth manner. Without their work, this would have been a nightmare.
We had 513 models for judging and display with 293 for technical judging.
We are not sure on total visitor numbers at this stage but whilst it seemed slightly down from the last years [where entry numbers were up] that was coming from a [2020] covid shutdown and so there were two years of models for entry instead of the normal numbers.
We rely heavily on volunteers to run this event. I would like to extend our appreciation to all who assisted with the setup, strip-down and general running of the event over the two days. In particular, the 30 volunteers who stayed back on the Saturday night to assist with the judging really did make the process move along. It was finished in what seemed to me record time. We had a small break for pizza and refreshments and were still able to finish the task relatively early. All judges were given a small bag of goodies from the club as a token of the committee’s appreciation.
I would also like to acknowledge our traders, some of whom had travelled long distances to support our event. They do help to make the show enjoyable by letting us view different products in the modelling scene.
The Committee will now take a short break before we meet again to have a debrief on any highlights and improvements that can be made for next year.
The wonderful news is that Prince Alfred College have already given us the go ahead for next year due to the way we conducted ourselves as individuals and as an organisation.
Once again, congratulations to all involved.

References for your entry

The one thing which can mean the difference in winning or placing in the model expo is the references that are supplied with the model. Many times the expo judges have judged great models at the expo but the models references have been nonexistent or wrong and this has prevented a worthy model from placing, or in some cases even winning. It’s an easy 10 points towards your overall score.

Ensure your referencing is succinct and make sure you include the relevant details relating to the build. Box art, kit instructions, aftermarket part (if used) instructions, modifications which you may have made in the build and any corrections that you may have made to kit flaws or inaccuracies. If you have corrected flaws or enhanced a model, provide some photographic or drawing references. If some of the references or photos that you used are in a book or books then photo copy the relevant material and include it.

Please make sure the supplied references are relevant to the subject modelled. This is also especially important if you choose a different scheme or markings than what was supplied in the kit. If the accuracy of the references to the subject doesn’t match then this will lose you points.

For some model kits supplied references can be problematic. Many figures or Sci-Fi kits come from low-production manufacturers and sometimes kit instructions or box art are scant or non-existent. In this case Google is your answer. If someone has kitted a subject then that subject must have some information be somewhere online
